Today, Adam Verwey is Founder and Director of Future Super, but in his younger years he couldn’t shake the frustration about the impact mining was having on Australia. Then, when he got to Uni and he got a job, he was also put into a default super fund. And then, he did something that not many people do… he actually looked into the companies the super fund was investing in. And top of the list was a mining company.

And so began his mission to find another way, to build an investment fund that not only steers clear of the fossil fuel industry, but one which supports the companies that are coming up with solutions, in renewable energy and in a whole range of sectors focussed on sustainability as much as strong financial returns.

…We dug into why people are so disengaged from their superannuation. We discussed the power that we all have to direct our retirement savings to do good in the world, and grow at the same time!

My key takeaway this week…

A quote from Adam sums it up…

“I don’t think it dangerous to extend your political values into other facets of your life, it’s more dangerous not to do those things. Because unless you change there’s some really bad things on the way.”

The Founder’s Mentality

How to Overcome the Predictable Crises of Growth

By: Chris Zook, James Allen

In the office we tend to read books about startups ad how to scale a business. It took me a wile to realise how hard it is to run a great business, and taking to read has been really helpful. I’m currently reading the founders mentality, which I m really enjoying, it’s highlighting how being at the front lines is something I enjoy.

The hard thing about hard things

Building a Business When There Are No Easy Answers

By: Ben Horowitz

Many books on startups focus on the sexy side of things, but there’s actually a lot of really hard things that happen everyday that you just don’t think about. And I think that book is really helpful in covering off on those things. And I turn back to it quite often when difficult things come up and I wonder how should I start thinking about these things.
